ROH Gauntlet for the Gold 2014 Review
On this week's episode of ROH TV, they held a 6 man gauntlet in which the winner would recieve a shot at Michael Elgin's ROH World Title. The competitors involved include BJ Whitmer, Cedric Alexander, Jay Lethal, Matt Taven, Romantic Touch, and Caprice Coleman. They're giving it the whole hour so this should be good.
1) BJ Whitmer vs. Caprice Coleman
Whitmer and Coleman started the gauntlet off with a nice exchange. They went at it for nearly 15 minutes and managed to put together a pretty entertaining match. I'm not a huge fan of either man, but they both put in a good performance that kept me interested. Whitmer advances. Nice start to the gauntlet.
Match rating - 6/10
2) BJ Whitmer vs. Matt Taven
I'm a fan of Taven's in-ring work so I was a bit more interested in this match than the first bout of the evening. Taven put in his usual impressive performance and worked well with Whitmer to provide a solid match. Taven picks up the win to advance in the gauntlet.
Match rating - 6/10
3) Matt Taven vs. Romantic Touch
At this point, I felt that the gauntlet needed an outstanding match since both of the first bouts were just average solid encounters. Well, we ended up getting the opposite. It may be because I'm not into the Romantic Touch character, but I found it hard to get into this match. With that being said, I feel like somebody such as Tommasso Ciampa should have been in this gauntlet instead of Romantic Touch. Ciampa is a former TV Champion and deserved the opportunity, but for whatever reason, Romantic Touch found his way into this thing. Thankfully Matt Taven advanced in the gauntlet so we wouldn't have to see any more of Romantic Touch. This was a decent match, but I just couldn't get into it.
Match rating - 4/10
4) Matt Taven vs. Jay Lethal
You can always count on these two to put on a good match and that's exactly what they did here. After the buzzkill of Romantic Touch in the gauntlet, Taven and Lethal brought back my interest with this bout. We may have seen these two wrestle multiple times this year, but they always put on good matches so I can't complain. I do think the feud should have been finished awhile ago since it's been going on virtually all year, but none the less, they put on another very good match here. Lethal advances!
Match rating - 7/10
5) Jay Lethal vs. Cedric Alexander
I saw these two put on an absolutely amazing match in PWX in late 2013 so I was super excited to see them clash in the finals of this gauntlet. I don't think I was the only one because when Cedric's music hit and he ran to the ring, the crowd exploded! He's really come into his own in the past year or so and I've been saying it for awhile - Cedric Alexander is the next big star. In fact, he's the guy I was most excited about seeing in this gauntlet and he sure as hell delivered. Lethal and Alexander put on a great match here. It may not have been the classic they had in PWX, but it was a damn good main event for this week's TV show and perfect way to close the gauntlet. Alexander picks up the huge victory over Lethal and will face Elgin for the World Title!
Match rating - 8/10
Overall thoughts: Tonight's show started off slow and gradually began picking up then it dropped off with the Touch/Taven match, but Taven/Lethal brought the show back up to par then Lethal/Alexander tore the house down. With that being said, there's two really good matches here in Taven/Lethal and Alexander/Lethal. The one I'd say that you must check out is Lethal/Alexander because it was just great. Good show.
