Lucha Underground Review - June 24th, 2015

After last week's wild iron man match that saw Prince Puma retain the Lucha Underground title over Johnny Mundo, it's time to start setting the stage for Ultimo Lucha. That begins with a #1 Contender's Match between Drago, the man that lost his contract with LU after a loss to Puma, and the unstoppable force that is Mil Muertes. An aztec medallion is also on the line in a five way dance tonight so things are bound to get crazy!

1) Sexy Star vs. Super Fly
Not such a hot start to the show here. Everything was executed in a solid manner, but it just didn't flow extremely well and I didn't like the booking of it. Sexy just beat Pentagon Jr a month or so ago and now she's losing without much of a fight to Super Fly? That makes no sense. She got in SOME offense here, it just ended in a much more dull way than I expected. In my mind, I had Sexy Star getting the win however I was totally wrong in my prediction despite still feeling it would've been the right move. UNLESS they're building to something with Super Fly that I don't know about. Let's not discuss the unknown though. I saw someone on Twitter say this was one of the worst LU matches and I can see that argument considering there's a rarely a bout that I don't enjoy, but I've seen way worse in wrestling than this. Decent little encounter here even though the fact that I sat through a dreadful Raw a few days ago may be making me go easy on this.

Match rating - **1/4

Pentagon Jr hits the ring for the five-way match with an Aztec Medallion on the line. He gets on the mic and starts calling out Vampiro. OH MAN I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THEIR ISSUES! I soon remembered though as we got an intense staredown with a little shoving. A brawl is teased before Pentagon is escorted out. That was hype. I'm guessing we'll get a match between them at Ultimo Lucha and I can't wait!

2) Cage vs. Mack vs. Aerostar vs. Marty Martinez

Jack Evans and Fenix have medallions, who will join them in holding one? This match will determine that. The last multi-man with one of these on the line was completely insane and this came close to it. Everyone got their chance to shine and there were a number of holy shit moments & high impact moves. A sequence of dives, Cage lifting up Aerostar and tossing him backwards over his head to the outside of the ring, and Mack hitting an exploder suplex on Cage on the ring apron followed by a frogsplash on the floor were a few of the highlights. Fun match in which Aerostar surprisingly picks up the win.

Match rating - ***1/2

3) Drago vs. Mil Muertes

Hernandez attacks Drago out of nowhere before the match for whatever reason. I was pretty bummed because I thought the main event would be off, but the show must go on and Drago goes into the match anyway. He held his own despite being banged up from the assault by Hernandez however Muertes was just too much for him. Every time Drago would produce a flurry of offense, Muertes would shut him down. Drago kept fighting though and it took quite a bit to put him away so I wouldn't say he looked weak here by any means. I just question what's next for him? A feud with Hernandez, possibly? But what's the reasoning behind it besides the random attack? Please don't go the WWE/Bray Wyatt route with this, LU! I'm only kidding, I'm sure something noteworthy will come of it. Not a bad main event although it's not your typical blow away LU bout as it was more about storyline progression much like the Hernandez/El Patron match a few weeks ago.

Match rating - **3/4

Overall thoughts:
As far as in-ring action goes, you could say it was an off week for Lucha. The opening match was meh and the main event featured a fair amount of controversy. The four way for the Aztec Medallion was the only match that broke three stars here. An "off week" for the matches in LU often means more storyline work though and we got our share of that here with the main event being solely dedicated to progressing us towards Ultimo Lucha in sports entertainment fashion. I'd say this was a solid episode as the groundwork for Ultimo Lucha was laid in several departments and the four way was pretty fun to watch.
