Lucha Underground Review - February 17th, 2016
FINALLY, after weeks of not being home to catch the new season of Lucha Underground, I got my first taste of what my favorite TV promotion had in store for 2016. For those curious, I DO have the first few episodes that I missed and I do plan on reviewing them, but I feel it would be dumb to hold up on posting this when I watched/reviewed it as it happened. Therefore, here we are.
The main event tonight is a dream match: Prince Puma vs. Pentagon Jr. Damn, I really did miss LU, this is gonna rule. However, that's later. Trios action is up first!
1) Angelico, Ivelisse, & Son of Havoc vs. Chavo Guerrero & The Crew
High impact, fast paced match to kick off the festivities here. Every person gets their chance to shine with the exception of Angelico whom they built the hot tag towards. Once he got in, it was more than worth the wait as he went absolutely nuts with his unbelievably fluent offense. He was legitimately flying all around the ring. In the end, he would lead his team to victory which didn't set well at all with Chavo Guerrero who had a bone to pick with Cisco post match for taking the pin. Amidst this controversy, Texano Jr runs out and plows over both members of the Crew in route to Chavo Guerrero although Chavo would get away before he could get his hands on him. Sneaky bastard.
Match rating - **3/4
Backstage, Cisco is seen in deep thought in the locker room when none other than Joey Ryan approaches. God help us. I think is Joey's first match in LU so he basically tells Cisco to watch how he gets the job done.
2) Cage vs. Joey Ryan
Two P DUB G boys on national TV. What a time to be alive. This was pretty much what you'd expect, if not better than what you expect, because it was a pretty compact match and straight to the point which works well for both men. A lot of power moves from Cage obviously, but Joey as well. A superkick or two from Joey for a nice pop before Cage pops him up and drives him down with a Steiner Screwdriver for the win.
Match rating - **1/4
After the match, Johnny Mundo runs in from behind and attacks Cage. This goes along with some vignettes that aired earlier in the night which were really good. The jist of it is that Mundo is pissed because he was in the opening match at Ultima Lucha when he's a main eventer. Mundo still wants the Lucha Underground Title however Cage has positioned himself in his way. So, that leads us here to this exchange. Mundo has the upperhand until he goes for starship pain, Cage moves, and nails Mundo with Weapon X.
3) Prince Puma vs. Pentagon Jr
Main event time daddy! I couldn't be more excited for this! It's almost like a #1 Contender's match when you think about it. One thing I've noticed in watching tonight for the first time this season is that Vampiro is really on the side of Pentagon as he sounds like a strict mentor as he calls him down for wasting time and not putting away Puma. Puma & Pentagon run through a lot of fun stuff in the first 7-8 minutes. The misdirection cutter from Puma, backbreaker from Pentagon, all their signatures. This led to an extremely unique finish that played into the direction they were going from the sound of the bell. Pentagon hits the package piledriver, but doesn't go for the pin which pisses Vampiro off. Pentagon, instead, locks in the surfboard and bends Puma back which is smart in theory until you see what happens next. Pentagon slides Puma back where his shoulders are on the mat, but as soon as the ref counts two, Puma bridges his head up and as the ref counts three, who's shoulders were on the mat? Pentagon Jr's! I loved that finish! Sly victory for Prince Puma.
