AEW: Revolution PPV Review - March 7th, 2021

AEW: Revolution

March 7th, 2021

Daily’s Place - Jacksonville, FL

Commentary - Excalibur, Jim Ross, & Tony Schiavone

The Buy In/Pre-Show:

1) Thunder Rosa & Riho vs. Britt Baker & Maki Itoh

Rebel is injured so she can’t compete which led to Britt having a surprise partner which turns out to be... MAKI ITOHHHHHHH. Wow that’s actually a real shocker and I am very excited to see her here. This did go a little long, but it was largely enjoyable and I'm happy they are making the most of Riho & Itoh in the states.

Match rating - **1/2

MAIN SHOW:

2) The Young Bucks (c) vs. Chris Jericho & MJF - AEW World Tag Team Title Match

This is a tough one for me and it has been since it was announced. In restrospect, it was perfect in regards to what happens with Jericho & MJF, but the road to get there was tough to grasp for me soooo even though The Bucks are my favorite team of all time, I wasn't massively stoked for this match. The build was a lot better than expected though and this match was more than fine, however, it wasn't one that got me off my feet or ever had my full attention. And maybe that's why I don't have as much praise for it as others, but I don't really have much negative to say about it. It was routine stuff and there was some good action and spots down the stretch, just not something I will probably ever look back on again. Bucks retain after a fun match.

Match rating - ***1/4

3) Casino Tag Team Battle Royal

Lots of lesser known teams in this. Bear Country got a nice run with some huge eliminations. The best part of this for me was Fenix & Jungle Boy having an absolutely amazing sequence that made me want to beg for a singles match between the two cause DEAR LORD they killed it. PAC & Fenix win when all is said and done.

Match rating - **3/4

4) Hikaru Shida (c) vs. Ryo Mizunami - AEW Women's Championship Match

These two ladies really gave it their all here. There just seemed to be some hiccups down the stretch that took it down 1 or 2 quarter stars for me. If all the pieces had fit like intended, this could have easily been a four star banger. That's not to discredit it, however because this gave us all the stiff action you could ask for, along with some gasp worthy moments. I feel like Shida's reign is finally picking up a little steam. She retains here.

Match rating - ***1/4

5) Chuck Taylor & Orange Cassidy vs. Miro & Kip Sabian (w/ Penelope Ford)

Chuck is attacked backstage and does a lil blade job, but it doesn't quite go like intended, however, I appreciate the unique start to this match that was way more fun than I expected. Chuck & Orange eat the loss, but man, this shit was a fucking blast and exactly what the card needed at this point.

Match rating - ***

6) Hangman Adam Page vs. Matt Hardy

I'm not even going to type out the stipulation for this because I god damn hate it. What I did not hate, though, was this match. Page managed to pull a nice little hoot of a match out of old man Matt Hardy and gets the win after a buckshot lariat. Dark Order celebrates with Adam after preventing interference from Private Party. I'm glad they are continuing the Dark Order stuff with him.

Match rating - **3/4

7) Darby Allin & Sting vs. Brian Cage & Ricky Starks

FIRST OFF. SHOUT OUT WICCA PHASE IN THE DARBY/STING ENTRANCE VIDEO. Secondly, this was the best match of the night up to this point. Yeah, it's cinematic and pre-taped, but I don't give a fuck. They killed this in presentation and execution. You had serious moments, funny moments, and OMG moments like the Darby glass spot and Darby coffin dropping off two stories up into the middle of this warehouse or whatever. This fully establishes/furthers what Darby is, it protects and makes Sting look more than capable, and Cage & Starks are the best bad guys for the ultra babyfaces to battle. It felt like the perfect blend of a movie scene and wrestling match. Good shit. Sting wins with a scorpion death drop.

Match rating - ****

8) Kenny Omega (c) vs. Jon Moxley - Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match for the AEW World Championship

The main thing everyone talks about from this match is the POST MATCH, but I'm not even getting into that yet. I feel like what happened afterwards has made people shit on what a truly awesome match this was. The feeling of suspense was there from the entrances of both champion & challenger and the execution once the bell rang continued that. I think we got more than enough of the brutality expected from this with Moxley bleeding buckets early and every board/barbed wire/explosion spot down the stretch delivering big. This felt dangerous and like a fight between two all time great rivals. Omega wins with help from Gallows & Anderson after a god damned WAR.

Match rating - ****1/4

So, after the match, you know what happens. Anderson & Gallows help Omega beat Moxley further. They leave him alone to take the brunt of the final explosion as the timer is still counting for when the 30 minute mark is hit. EDDIE KINGSTON comes out with 10 seconds left to try and make the save in a heart warming moment, but can't get him up so he covers Mox and prepares to take the hit as well. ANDDD.. it's just sparklers. Yeah, this sucked. We all know it. It sent the show home with an insanely anti climactic ending that made you feel dumb as King & Mox were selling virtually nothing until we went off air.
