Ruthless Aggression Era Project: WWE Smackdown Review - September 25th, 2003

WWE Smackdown
September 25th, 2003
Philadelphia, PA

WWE Champion: Brock Lesnar (since 9/18/03)
WWE United States Champion: Eddie Guerrero (since 7/27/03)
WWE Tag Team Champions: Los Guerreros (since 9/18/03)
WWE Cruserweight Champion: Rey Mysterio (since 6/5/03)

The show opens with Mr. McMahon & Sable in the ring ready to present Brock Lesnar with the WWE Championship and celebrate his victory over Kurt Angle last week. Vince goes to introduce Lesnar, but we get Kurt Angle instead. Vince cuts him off and says he knows he’s out here to either complain about Brock screwing him last week or ask for a rematch, but that he should be here to congratulate him. Angle says he wants to fight Brock right now and if he doesn’t come out there, he will go in the back and find him. Another unexpected surprise comes of this as John Cena’s music hits. Cena comes out and does a problematic rap on Kurt. This pisses Kurt off and he swings on Cena and Cena flees to the back. Angle says since Brock isn’t coming out, he’s gonna go to the back AND FIND THAT STUPID SON OF A BITCH.

Angle jumps out of the ring and trots to the back. He finds Brock’s dressing room, but he’s not in there. On his way out, Cena is hiding in a closet and jumps out and lays Kurt out then flees the scene.

Back from commercial, John Cena flees the arena in a car. Kurt comes hobbling out of the garage and threatens Vince’s limo driver to drive him after him or he’ll beat his ass. They peel off after Cena.

1) Los Guerreros (Eddie Guerrero & Chavo Guerrero) (c) vs. Matt Hardy & Shannon Moore - WWE Tag Team Title Match

Bro. This might be one of my favorite tag sprints ever. Crisp as fuck while following the tag rules the whole time, but the action never ever slowed down. Eddie & Chavo get the win in 4 or 5 minutes off a frog splash to retain the titles, but good lord man.. these guys killed this.

Match rating - ***1/2

After the match, Matt Hardy attacks Eddie with the belt. Chavo tries to save him, but is too late. Eddie still has a US Title defense later tonight.

A-Train comes out and wants to fight somebody.. anybody. He says everybody in Philadelphia thinks they’re tough, but they’re all cowards like Chris Benoit. A-Train goes after the timekeeper and Benoit comes out for the save. Train lays him out with a chair after a small brawl.

In the trainer’s room, Eddie is getting checked on. Chavo yells for the trainer to figure out what’s wrong. The trainer says Eddie shouldn’t wrestle later and Eddie says he can, because he knows what he can & can’t do. Chavo says “YEAH HE KNOWS” lmao.

Backstage, Vince and Sable are about to funk when a production guy shows up. Vince is annoyed and tells him to make sure he the red carpet and stuff gets set up again later because he still needs to present the title to Brock the right way.

Meanwhile, Charlie Haas has an interview and says Eddie deserved what happened to him and that later tonight he’s gonna steal the US Title from him like they got their tag titles stolen by Los Guerreros.

They show replays of Tajiri misting Rey Mysterio the other week. He challenges him for the Cruserweight title up next.

2) Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Tajiri - WWE Cruserweight Championship Match

God damn, this is a banger. Tajiri works the mid section of Rey after some early flashy exchanges. Tazz puts over the strength of Tajiri’s legs as he has Mysterio scissored in the middle of the ring. This was just a perfectly built Junior heavyweight television match, especially in 2003. Tajiri goes for the green mist and fails. So later down the stretch during Rey’s comeback and after some ref bumps, Tajiri brings out RED MIST and buzzsaw kicks his way to the Cruserweight championship. I did not expect a title change here so that was the icing on the cake.. a surprise finish. LETS GOOO.

Match rating - ***1/2

Next week, we get an update on Zach Gowen.

3) The Basham Brothers (w/ Shanequa) vs. Bradshaw & Jamie Noble (w/ Nidia)

Before this match, Cole & Tazz are plugging the high ratings they’ve gotten over the last few weeks. They transition from that to this by saying “And it’s because you get to see stars like… The Basham’s..” unbelievable.

Jamie Noble comes out and says Billy Gunn is supposed to be his partner, but is injured HOWEVER he and THE BASHAM BOYS GOT SOME UNFINISHED BUSINESS and since he’s a rich man he found himself a new partner and it’s BIG BRADSHAW FROM THE APA BAH GAWD. I wonder if this when Bradshaw decided he wanted the Basham’s in his future CABINET. Lordy Lordy. Mid 2000’s Smackdown lore. Anyways, this happens. Shanequa interferes so it ends in DQ. The Bashams lay out everyone after the match and yeah.

They air a recap video of the Iron Man Match from last week.

4) Eddie Guerrero (c) vs. Charlie Haas - United States Championship

This is Eddie’s second title defense of the night. Big Show attacks Eddie during his entrance which sets the stage for the story of this match with Eddie fighting basically the tallest odds possible. Haas follows up on the attack by Show by continuing to target the injured ribs of Guerrero. Eddie’s selling rules, they run some shenanigans with Chavo trying to get to the ring to help Eddie and then eventually Eddie using his title to hit Haas and gain the advantage and the victory. Great stuff.

Match rating - ***

And now.. the show looks to end just how it started. Brock Lesnar’s championship presentation ceremony thing. Vince & Sable are in the ring again and this time, Brock actually comes out. They present Lesnar with the title and he gives a speech about how he beat Kurt Angle. In the midst of this, THE UNDERTAKER rides out on his motorcycle. Taker tells Vince that he promised him not to interfere in the title match last week and he didn’t because he respects the title… but he doesn’t respect the person holding it. Taker says he remembers Brock hitting him with a chair during his title match and he doesn’t forget nor forgive. Taker announces that Brock’s first title defense is against him. Vince intervenes and asks on whose authority is he gonna face Brock Lesnar for the title AND HERE COMES STEPHANIE MCMAHON. BAH GAWD. She confirms it —- at No Mercy next month, Brock defends his title against The Undertaker. Vince says no no no no, and that he’s giving Stephanie an opportunity to change her mind. Because if she doesn’t change her mind.. she will be in a match at No Mercy against.. him. In the first father-daughter match in WWE history. Steph stands her ground despite this and Vince says it will be an “I Quit” Match between them at No Mercy. He calls her a disrespectful bitch and goes to hit her. Taker stops him, Brock hits Taker. Vince flees, but Brock falls to Taker. Taker stands over Brock and poses with the title while his music plays to close the show. Two big PPV matches set up in one segment, that’s pretty sick even if one of them is fucking stupid.
